The Most Valuable Types of Scrap Metal
There are various types of scrap metal that can be found throughout homes and businesses that may potentially be valuable. Taking advantage of this monetary opportunity will require individuals to determine which items contain these metals and how much they are worth.

Types of Scrap Metal
Types of scrap metal are split into two categories: ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals are magnetic, while non-ferrous metals are not.
The most valuable types of non-ferrous metal that you may have lying around your home or business include:
  • Brass- Commonly found in plumbing, pipes, and wires.
  • Bronze- A combination of copper, tin, and other metals.
  • Aluminum- Thin pliable sheet metal, silver in color.
  • Lead- Heavy, soft metal. Can be found in roofing and batteries.
  • Copper- Commonly found in old radiators, wiring, and plumbing pipes, reddish brown in color.
The most valuable types of ferrous metals are steel and iron.
Steel is the most common type of scrap metal that can be found and sold for a profit. This metal can be found in appliances throughout your home. Steel is composed of a strong iron alloy but does have the potential to rust easily if it's not stainless.
Iron is less common but can be found in some appliances. This is a soft metal when not combined with another type of metal and it is recyclable.

Rare Metals
There are rare metals that are less commonly found but worth a significant amount of money. The value of rare scrap metals are affected by several factors, including:
  • Quality
  • Amount
  • Demand
  • Geographic Location
  • Current Market (US and Abroad)
Currently, gold, titanium and copper are in the lead for the most valuable scrap metals.
