What Should You Keep Out of a Roll-Off Dumpster
Rentable Roll-Off Dumpsters are extremely valuable to job sites. Not only is recycling scrap metal better for the environment but it can also decrease expenses for a job site. Massachusetts contractors in the Greater Boston area can save money by getting roll-off dumpsters from Second Street Iron & Metal. We handle the pick-up and drop-off so you save time and money transporting heavy scrap metal from your location to a local yard. The bottomline is that a roll-off dumpster or two can really improve the efficiency of collecting and disposing of unneeded scrap metal. But it is important to know how to properly use these containers.
When To Get A Roll-Off Dumpster
Roll-off dumpsters are great for a variety of projects. Construction, demolition, and landscaping can all utilize dumpsters to safely and effectively collect waste before it is transported. However, there are a few key differences between a roll-off dumpsters and a traditional dumpster rental. Roll-off dumpsters are designed for transporting scrap metal, they can be easily loaded and unloaded to a special flatbed truck that allows for quick and effective transportation. They are lidless and designed to only contain metal, not garbage. A traditional dumpster can be used to collect trash and debris that cannot be recycled.
What You Shouldn't Put in a Roll-Off Dumpster
There are a few materials that should not ever be put into a roll-off dumpster. They include the following:
  • Electronics: Computers, printers, DVD players, and other electronic equipment should not be disposed of in a roll-off dumpster. Different states have different laws about what can be recycled and how it can be recycled. Even if a scrap yard accepts electronics, it can be on a case by case basis and those electronics should be brought individually to the yard.
  • Batteries: Most scrap metal yards only recycle car batteries or other mechanical batteries. Double A batteries, rechargeable batteries, and any of the zinc or acid-based batteries that are used in phones, smoke detectors, or other goods should not be placed in a roll-off dumpster. These batteries need to be brought to a waste center that specifically handles the disposal of batteries.
  • Lightbulbs: No lightbulbs should ever be disposed of into a dumpster. Lightbulbs need to be properly disposed of at a hazardous materials center.
  • Chemicals: Chemical waste should not be mixed with scrap metal nor should it be sent to a landfill. A company that deals with hazardous materials can get rid of any chemicals components safely.
  • Refrigerators: Similar to electronics, any appliances you intend to scrap need to be brought to a scrap yard and safely broken down to their core components. Refrigerators, air conditioners, and freezers are especially dangerous because of the freon gases used to cool items. This gas is very dangerous and which is why anything with cooling components needs to be taken care of by a team that specializes in hazardous goods.
